Glow: New u-he Diva Presets for Melodic House

Glow is 125 u-he Diva presets for melodic house from my own productions: 16 arps, 19 basses, 24 leads, 25 pads, 16 plucks and 25 SFX, plus how to use...

Glow is my pack of u-he Diva presets for melodic house, built for my own productions and tested in real tracks before it went anywhere near the store. It has 125 presets: arps, basses, leads, pads, plucks and effects, all built to sit together in the same track. In this post I'll show you what's inside, how I'd use each category in an arrangement, and which Diva settings to tweak so the presets fit your track rather than the demo.

What Glow is and why I built it in Diva

Melodic house lives on warmth. Basses that feel round rather than hard, pads that breathe, leads that sing without cutting your ears off. I'm a producer from Berlin and I release melodic and progressive house and techno as MAX BLÜCHER, and the warm, harmonic side of melodic house is where most of my own tracks live: more emotional, a little softer at the edges than a lot of techno.

I built Glow in u-he Diva because Diva is very good at exactly that sound. Its oscillators and filters are modelled on classic analogue circuits, and the way the filters respond to envelopes and resonance feels like hardware. That makes it great for basses and pads that need to be warm and moving without a pile of extra processing.

If you're new to the synth, how to use u-he Diva properly is a good primer before you start editing the presets.

What's inside the Glow Diva presets for melodic house

Glow contains 125 Diva presets. Every preset name starts with a short category prefix, so you can type it into Diva's browser search and see only that category.

Category Prefix Presets
Arps AR 16
Basses BS 19
Leads LD 24
Pads PD 25
Plucks PL 16
SFX SFX 25
Total 125

Nine of the 125 are bonus V.2 variants: alternative versions of presets in the pack, mostly pads. They're there because some sounds worked in two different directions and I didn't want to pick one.

All presets are royalty free, so you can use them in your releases without extra fees. They load in u-he Diva in any DAW that runs it. The Diva preset install guide shows where they go on Mac and Windows.

How to use each category in a melodic house track

Basses

Start here. In melodic house the bass carries the groove and a lot of the harmony, so pick it before the pad. Play a simple offbeat or rolling pattern against your kick and try several basses in a row. Listen for two things: does the low end stay steady when you play higher notes, and does the attack leave the kick room? If a bass feels too long for your groove, shorten the decay of the filter modulation a little rather than cutting it with EQ.

Pads

Pads are tied for the biggest category in Glow for a reason: they set the mood of the whole track. Load a pad and play your chord progression in a middle register. If it clashes with the bass, move the chord voicing up rather than reaching straight for a high pass filter. Let each pad play for a full eight bars before you judge it, because slow filter and level movement often only shows up after a few bars.

Arps

Arps give a track motion without taking up much space. Try each one with a held chord and with single notes, and see which it responds to best. They work well in the build and the second half of a breakdown. If an arp is too busy against your hats, try it one octave higher and lower its level; it'll read as texture instead of melody.

Plucks

Plucks are for the hooks you write with a few notes: short, rhythmic, catchy. Program a two bar phrase and loop it. If you need more space, send the pluck to a short delay return rather than using a longer release, which keeps the rhythm clear.

Leads

Leads are for the moment the track opens up. Try playing them in from a keyboard rather than drawing notes, and check what the mod wheel and velocity do on each one. In a busy drop, a lead often needs less reverb than you think. Pull the send down until it just stops feeling dry.

SFX

The 25 SFX presets are effects and textures for transitions and breakdowns. Play one long note across the last four or eight bars before a drop and automate the level. They're also great quiet in the background of a breakdown, where they fill the space without adding more harmony.

Here's a quick way to test whether the pack fits your sound. Set your project to around 122 BPM and add a kick and a clap.

  1. Bass first. Load a BS preset, write a one bar offbeat pattern in a minor key, and loop it. Adjust the bass level so the kick still punches.
  2. Pad second. Load a PD preset on a new track and play three or four sustained chords that fit the bass notes, one chord per two bars.
  3. Arp third. Copy the pad MIDI to a new track with an AR preset. If the arp works better with single notes, keep only the root notes.
  4. Lead or pluck last. Write a short phrase on top with an LD or PL preset. Keep it simple, three to five notes.
  5. One SFX. Put an SFX preset over the last four bars and automate the volume up.

Because the presets were built together, they usually sit with nothing more than level changes. Everything after that is arrangement.

Diva tweaks that make Glow presets yours

  • Filter cutoff and resonance. The quickest way to change a preset's mood. Close the cutoff a little for a darker version of a pad, or open it for a brighter lead.
  • Envelope decay. Shorter decay tightens basses and plucks for faster grooves; longer decay makes them rounder.
  • Oscillator model. Switching the model changes the character of a preset completely. The Diva oscillator models guide explains what each one does.
  • Built in effects. Turn Diva's own reverb or delay down and use your DAW's return tracks, so all your synths sit in the same space.
  • Glide. A touch of glide on mono basses and leads gives melodic house its slightly liquid feel.

Common mistakes with Diva presets

  • Running every instance at the highest quality while writing. Diva is heavy on CPU. Use a lower quality setting while you work and switch up for the final bounce. The Diva CPU guide explains how.
  • Stacking reverbs. Five presets with their own reverb plus your returns will smear the mix.
  • Judging pads in solo. Always check them against the bass and drums.
  • Using too many categories at once. A strong melodic house track can be a bass, a pad, an arp and one lead. More isn't better.

Glow, Glow Producer Edition, and the free Glow presets

There are three ways to get Glow:

  • Free Glow Diva presets: 23+ presets taken from Glow, free, so you can try the sound first.
  • Glow: the full pack of 125 presets.
  • Glow Producer Edition: all 125 Glow presets plus the Analog DIVA Preset Guide as a PDF, and a video showing how to use Diva with the pack. It's the one to get if you want to learn the synth, not just use the sounds.

Glow is also part of the Complete u-he Diva Preset Bundle, together with Current, Pulse, Cascade and Static, if you want every Distrikt Diva pack at once.

FAQ

Which synth do I need for Glow?

u-he Diva. The presets are Diva patches, so you need a licence for Diva itself. They work in any DAW that runs Diva as a plugin.

What's the difference between Glow and Glow Producer Edition?

Both have the same 125 presets. The Producer Edition adds the Analog DIVA Preset Guide (PDF) and a video showing how to use Diva with the pack.

Can I use Glow in commercial releases?

Yes. The presets are royalty free, so you can use them in your own tracks and releases.

Is Glow only for melodic house?

It's built for melodic house, but the basses, pads and arps also work in progressive house and softer melodic techno. For darker, peak time melodic techno, Static is the closer fit.

Is there a free version of Glow?

Yes. The free Glow Diva presets give you 23+ sounds from the pack so you can test them in your own tracks first.
