How to Install u-he Diva Presets on Mac and Windows

Where Diva keeps its presets on Mac and Windows, how to install a pack step by step using the free Glow Diva presets, and what to check when new presets...

You download a Diva pack, open the plugin, and the new sounds are nowhere to be found. Nine times out of ten the files are sitting in the wrong folder or Diva simply hasn't refreshed its browser yet. This guide shows you how to install u-he Diva presets on Mac and Windows properly, using the free Glow Diva presets as the example, and how to fix it when your presets don't show up.

What you're actually installing

Diva presets are .h2p files. That's u-he's preset format, one small file per sound, and the same extension is used by Hive, Repro-5 and the other u-he synths. So a folder full of .h2p files is not automatically a Diva pack: always check the pack is made for Diva.

Most packs, including the free Glow Diva presets, arrive as a ZIP with a folder of .h2p files inside. Some developers also ship a u-he soundset file, which is a single file you drop onto the plugin. I'll cover both.

Before you start, unzip the download. Diva can't read presets inside a ZIP, and this is the single most common reason a "broken" pack doesn't appear.

Where Diva keeps its presets: Local and User

Open the preset browser in Diva and you'll see two main folders on the left: Local and User. Local holds the factory library (numbered folders plus third party banks). User is where your own patches and any packs you add belong. u-he's own manual recommends that you don't add or remove anything in Local and keep all your creations and third party soundsets in User.

These are the default folder paths from the Diva user guide:

System User folder (install packs here) Local folder (factory, leave alone)
macOS Macintosh HD/Users/YOUR NAME/Library/Audio/Presets/u-he/Diva/ Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Presets/u-he/Diva/
Windows C:\Users\YOUR NAME\Documents\u-he\Diva.data\UserPresets\Diva\ C:\Users\YOUR NAME\Documents\u-he\Diva.data\Presets\Diva\

Notice the trap on Mac: there are two Library folders. The one at the top level of the drive is the factory Local folder. The one inside your user folder is the User folder. Most "my presets vanished" messages I've seen come from mixing those two up.

The shortcut that works on both systems

If you don't want to deal with paths at all, let Diva take you there:

  1. Open Diva in your DAW.
  2. In the preset browser, right click the User folder.
  3. Choose Open in Finder (Mac) or Open in Explorer (Windows).
  4. Drag your unzipped pack folder into the window that opens.
  5. Back in Diva, right click the User folder again and choose Refresh.

This also works if you picked a custom data location during installation, because Diva opens whatever folder it's really using.

How to install u-he Diva presets on Mac, step by step

1. Unzip the pack

Double click the downloaded ZIP. You'll get a folder, for example "Glow Free". Keep the folder, don't dump loose files.

2. Open the User preset folder

Your user Library folder is hidden by default. The fastest way in: in Finder press Cmd + Shift + G (Go to Folder) and paste ~/Library/Audio/Presets/u-he/Diva, then press Return. Alternatively, open the Finder Go menu while holding Option and Library appears in the list.

3. Drag the folder in

Drop the whole "Glow Free" folder into the Diva folder. Diva shows subfolders as folders in the browser, so each pack stays in its own place.

4. Check in Diva

Open Diva and look under User. On a Mac, most Finder operations update the browser automatically, according to the manual. If the folder doesn't show, right click User and choose Refresh.

How to install Diva presets on Windows, step by step

1. Extract the ZIP

Right click the download and choose Extract All. Windows lets you open a ZIP like a folder, but Diva can't read files that are still inside it, so actually extract it.

2. Open the User preset folder

Go to Documents\u-he\Diva.data\UserPresets\Diva. If there's no Diva.data folder in Documents, you probably chose a different location during installation: use the Open in Explorer shortcut above.

3. Copy the pack folder in

Paste the whole extracted folder into UserPresets\Diva.

4. Refresh the browser

This step matters more on Windows. The manual says a manual Refresh is required before the browser updates. Right click the User folder in Diva, choose Refresh, and the pack appears.

Installing a u-he soundset file

If a pack comes as a single soundset file instead of a folder of .h2p files, installing is even easier. The manual says you can drag and drop the soundset file onto Diva, anywhere on the interface. You can also click the u-he badge in the plugin and choose Install Soundset. Diva puts the sounds in the right place for you.

Organise the library before it gets messy

A few habits that keep a growing Diva library usable:

  • One folder per pack. Don't merge packs into one big folder. When you want to find the Glow bass you used last month, the folder name is your best clue.
  • Use Favourites. Right click any preset and choose Mark as Favourite. There are eight favourite slots, which I use as categories like "go to basses" or "pads for intros".
  • Save your edits to User. Before you hit Save, click the folder you want the preset to land in. The manual points this out, and it stops tweaked patches ending up in random places.
  • Use Copy to User Folder if you want to edit a factory preset. That keeps Local clean.
  • Back up the User folder. It's just files, so copy it to a drive or cloud folder now and then.

Diva presets not showing up? Quick fixes

  1. Still zipped: extract the ZIP first. Diva doesn't look inside archives.
  2. Wrong Library on Mac: check you used the Library inside your user folder (~/Library), not the one at the top of the drive.
  3. No refresh on Windows: right click User and choose Refresh. Windows doesn't update the browser automatically.
  4. Wrong synth: Hive, Repro-5 and Diva all use .h2p. A Hive preset in the Diva folder is not a Diva sound. Check the pack name and product page.
  5. Custom data location: if you changed the install location, the default paths won't match. Use Open in Finder or Open in Explorer from the User folder.
  6. Old instance: if you added files while a project was open, refresh the browser or load a fresh Diva instance.

Once the presets load, set your accuracy before you judge them. Diva's accuracy mode changes how the filters and FM sound, and the u-he Diva CPU guide explains which setting to use while writing and which for the final bounce.

Questions producers ask

Where is the Diva preset folder on Mac?

Your own presets and installed packs go in ~/Library/Audio/Presets/u-he/Diva. The factory presets live in /Library/Audio/Presets/u-he/Diva at the top level of the drive.

Where is the Diva preset folder on Windows?

By default it's Documents\u-he\Diva.data\UserPresets\Diva for your presets, and Documents\u-he\Diva.data\Presets\Diva for the factory library.

Do I need to restart my DAW after installing presets?

Usually not. A Refresh in Diva's browser is enough. On Mac it often updates by itself.

What is an h2p file?

It's the preset format of u-he synths. Each .h2p file is one patch. Diva, Hive and Repro-5 all use it, but a preset only works in the synth it was made for.

Now that your install works, grab the free Glow presets and look at how each one is built, then read how to use u-he Diva properly to start shaping them yourself. If you like the sound, the Complete u-he Diva Preset Bundle installs exactly the same way and gives you 480+ presets across five packs.
